- GAAP Update & ESG Reporting

Jeffrey Gabello, Financial Accounting Standards Board

Jeffrey Gabello

Jeff Gabello is a supervising project manager with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB [https://www.fasb.org/home]). He joined the FASB staff in May 2014, leading the project team that developed the 2017 standard to improve and simplify accounting rules around hedge accounting. Since early 2021, Jeff has been focusing on not-for-profit technical accounting issues. He also is the lead on the statement of cash flows project. Prior to joining the FASB, Jeff worked for five years as an accounting policy manager at IBM in Somers, New York, focusing on assessing the impact of FASB and International Accounting Standards Board standard-setting activities on the company's financial reporting. Prior to that, Jeff worked for eight years as the assistant director of external reporting at UBS AG in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on International Financial Reporting Standards, U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reporting. Jeff holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and an MBA from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Justin Hobson, Miller Nash LLP

Justin Hobson

Justin Hobson has experience helping clients on corporate and tax matters. He assists businesses, from startups to large international corporations, on tax issues and business transactions, possessing particular experience with and insight into clients within the cannabis industry. Justin also has experience with corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, financing transactions, securities offerings, and corporate governance.

Justin previously served as co-chair of the cannabis team at a large Pacific Northwest law firm, where he supported clients inside and outside of the cannabis industry on a wide range of tax and corporate needs, including all areas of income taxation, international tax matters, and matters related to corporate governance.

Justin began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP where his practice primarily focused on international tax matters. His experience includes tax return compliance, tax controversy matters, tax advice, and auditing income tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740.

Eric Robertson, Miller Nash LLP

Eric Robertson

Eric Robertson helps for profit and not-for-profit clients with a breadth of issues related to corporate formation, policies, compensation, contracts, and agreements. These include entity formation; drafting and reviewing of internal company policies, including conflict of interest, executive compensation, and internal controls policies; and reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, including small- and large-scale service agreements, executive employment agreements, and purchase and sale agreements. Eric also advises clients on a wide range of corporate governance issues involving corporate actions, bylaws, operating agreements, formation documents, and shareholder agreements.
Eric has a background in employee benefits and executive compensation and has advised employers on issues related to compliance with ERISA, IRS, and DOL regulations for single and multiemployer retirement plans. In the area of executive compensation, Eric assists clients in forming multifaceted equity compensation plans and deferred compensation plans for current and incoming executives and key employees who are compliant or exempt from Internal Revenue Code Section 409A.

Heather Van Meter, Miller Nash LLP

Heather Van Meter

Heather Van Meter represents and advises private, public, and not-for-profit entities throughout the Pacific Northwest. She counsels employers on a full range of employment- and workplace-related issues, including employment handbook and policy development, compliance with complex state and federal leave laws, wage and hour issues, disability and religious accommodations, employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims, and employee discipline and termination. Heather also helps employers draft, negotiate, and enforce employment-related contracts, such as noncompete, nonsolicitation, and nondisclosure agreements, as well as employment and executive employee contracts. She regularly prepares employment-related and contractor agreements and advises on employee situations for regional, national, and international companies. As a former professor and teacher, Heather enjoys providing workplace trainings on a variety of topics to ensure legal compliance while fostering a culture of inclusion. Heather is a trusted advisor to both small and large employers, offering forward-looking guidance to help clients maintain healthy, efficient workplaces.
Heather is recognized by her peers as a leading trial attorney. Her litigation practice specifically includes employment-related litigation, while she also has extensive experience in general civil litigation, including mass torts, drug and medical device and products liability, construction defects, negligence, condemnation, insurance coverage, and multi-district litigation in state and federal courts in Oregon and Washington. Heather's background includes over eight years in the Oregon Department of Justice's Civil Litigation Section as a senior assistant attorney general and trial attorney. She has completed over 30 trials to verdict in state and federal courts.

Troy Rector

Troy Rector is a shareholder in the Not-for-Profit and Governmental Services Group at Clark Nuber and has spent his career serving tax exempt organizations. He serves a range of community based organizations including low income housing, healthcare and those receiving governmental grant assistance. Troy regularly advises and presents on Uniform Guidance related topics. He is the auditing subcommittee chair of the Washington Society of CPA's Governmental Audit & Accounting Committee, a prior member of the AICPA's Government Audit Quality Center's Executive Committee and member of several Not-For Profit Boards and Finance Committees.

Jen Keller

When she's not traveling, you can find Jen reading or watching historical fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi dystopian books and movies. Jen, along with her two children, husband, and goldendoodle, now calls Washington her home.


Jen is a principal in the firm's Accounting and Consulting Services Group. She focuses on grant compliance and serves not-for-profit clients across a variety of industries. Jen has a thorough understanding of the ins-and-outs of not-for-profit organizations, having earned her master's degree in international human rights, along with previous work in programming for not-for-profits.

Kathleen Sohl

Kay Sohl has provided training and consultation for Executive Directors, CFOs, and Boards of Directors of over 7,000 nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. Kay focuses her work on rethinking nonprofit strategies for financial sustainability, Board financial oversight, compliance with federal funds management requirements, and the challenges of nonprofit accounting and financial reporting. She is a frequent presenter for state and regional coalitions of nonprofit human service providers.

Kay has authored multiple financial management toolkits for nonprofits, including resources for cost allocation, financial reporting, dashboard development, and the Uniform Guidance.

Kay founded and lead TACS (Technical Assistance for Community Services) now known as the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, the northwest’s largest and most comprehensive capacity building resource for community based nonprofit organizations. She is co-author of the Oregon Nonprofit Corporation Handbook, an 800-page guide to legal, financial, and governance requirements and strategies for nonprofit organizations. Now in its 5th edition, the Handbook has sold over 11,000 copies and is a must-have resource for founders, board members, managers, and funders of nonprofit organizations.

Jim White

Jim White joined the Nonprofit Association of Oregon as the Executive Director in October 2012. He is deeply committed to the social change through private action and has worked in the nonprofit sector both domestically and internationally for more than 25 years. Jim has a passion for affecting systemic change in the way that the public, private and nonprofit sectors work together to support and strengthen our communities and civil society. He believes that one of the purest democratic values is having private individuals identify needs and solutions, and lead change in their communities for the greater good. Through NAO, Jim is proud to help build the capacity, leadership and voice of Oregon's vibrant nonprofit sector.
Before joining NAO, Jim worked for Mercy Corps both overseas and in Oregon. He has also worked for the International Organization for Migration and the American Red Cross.
