Was it worth it to get your CPA credential?
Getting my CPA credential was the best decision I have ever made for my professional career. Accounting is my “second career”; I originally worked in cancer research for almost a decade. However, I discovered a new passion for accounting when I gained financial responsibilities in the research world. I decided to go back to school for an accounting degree and work towards a CPA license. As all CPAs know, the journey was not one taken lightly. When I finally achieved licensure with the state of Oregon, the credential symbolized validation and recognition in my new pursuit in life. I am confident that I have a whole lifetime of success in public accounting ahead of me. It is so exciting that I have only just begun!

Who inspired you along the way?
My accounting professors from Southern Oregon University inspired me tremendously along the way. Specifically, Professors Al Case, Dennis Slattery, and Sara Adams provided invaluable encouragement and guidance on my individual CPA journey. I cannot thank them enough for giving both broad and detailed advice on courses to take, CPA study methods to use, and helpful mindsets to employ both in school and during CPA exams. In addition, my husband was my biggest supporter. I studied and sat for the CPA exams while working full-time AND pregnant. Whenever I felt exhausted or stressed, my husband cheered me on and assured me I could do it. He, a non-accountant, even sat with me as I watched study videos and helped me drill concepts. Most importantly, he woke up early on my CPA exam days to make me the breakfast of champions (according to my pregnancy craving): macaroni and cheese!

What do you love about your job?
I work in tax accounting at SingerLewak, a public accounting firm in Salem, OR. What I love most about my job is the team spirit and comradery at the firm. Together, we navigate the nuances of tax accounting, such as new federal and state laws. Our leadership also somehow manages to make tax season fun, which is no easy feat. I also enjoy working on unique client tax situations. These projects not only bring peace of mind to clients in stressful situations, but also help me build a repertoire of skills in public accounting. There truly is always something new to learn, and I love it.

How has being an OSCPA member benefitted you?
OSCPA is truly a one-stop shop, with a wealth of information and resources for new and seasoned CPAs. When I was a student, the OSCPA generously chose me as a 2021 Educational Foundation scholarship winner. Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to complete my degree program and fulfill my CPA exam course requirements. As a new CPA, I have already attended late-breaking OSCPA CPE courses in hot accounting topics. The field of accounting is changing every day, and the OSCPA makes sure to inform and educate members in real time.

What advice would you give a student who’s thinking about becoming a CPA?
My advice for a new CPA is first to celebrate and pat yourself on the back. Earning the credential is a huge achievement! It is extremely important to let this sink in, as it will build confidence while tackling the public accounting world. Next, I would advise to have fun learning new topics through CPE. Look at the CPE hours requirement as an opportunity to expand knowledge and skill in this ever-changing field.
