Was it worth it to get your CPA credential?
It was absolutely worth it to become a CPA. The test was difficult, but it is a highly respected credential that opened up numerous job opportunities and something I am still proud of today (about 15 years after first getting certified).
Who inspired you along the way?
My dad was a CPA and had his own firm in a small town in Michigan. In addition to having a CPA firm, I saw that he had a really good business and investment sense that I really admired. I knew that even if I didn't work in public accounting, it would be a great foundation for whatever I wanted to do, whether I ended up being an entrepreneur or a professor!
What do you love about your job at Portland State University?
I love the people I get to work with — both the faculty and staff and the students. I find both of these groups to be incredibly inspiring, from faculty who are inspired about their research, staff who inspire me to think differently, and students who are working so hard while juggling numerous other things in their lives. I also love the autonomy to plan my own days and that research, teaching and service are complementary, but also very different activities and stimulate different parts of my brain.
How has being an OSCPA member benefitted you?
I have been serving on the board of The OSCPA Educational Foundation, which raises funds and distributes scholarships to Oregon accounting students. I have enjoyed getting to represent PSU faculty and students in this process and am proud of how many students we are able to help!
What is the biggest piece of advice you give your students?
My biggest piece of advice for students is to work hard in school, reach out when you need help, and try to make as many connections as possible. Having an accounting degree and CPA certification opens so many doors, so keep an open mind and just be professional and friendly to everyone you meet! Your first job may not be the best fit, but you'll find the right opportunity soon!
