Was it worth it to get your CPA credential?
Absolutely! Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It was a huge challenge to overcome, but well worth the effort.
Who inspired you along the way?
Too many people to count. However, on the top of the list is a group of middle school and high school teachers who saw my potential and were on a mission to show me that college was possible – they banded together and gifted me credits at the local community college. I started there, however it wasn’t the right time for me as there were other hurdles in my way, but it inspired me to continue to keep college open as an option. Later down the line, I became the first in my family to have a college degree, which had been a dream of mine, and I couldn’t have done it without the countless support from family, friends, and the great people I’ve met along the way.
What do you love about your job at Kern & Thompson?
I love being able to help my not-for-profit clients. I also enjoy the challenge of the job, it doesn’t get boring and there is always more to learn and grow from.
You’ve been an OSCPA member for 10 years. How has your membership benefitted you?
Being a member has allowed me to network within my field, as I’ve joined the Not-For-Profit Strategic Committee which has also been a great way to give back. OSCPA membership also offers great CPE that is specific to my interests and my niche.
What advice would you give an aspiring CPA working towards licensure?
Don’t give up! The classes are difficult and starting a new career while balancing studying for the exam can be tough, but getting the CPA accreditation opens doors in so many different directions.
