How are accounting and beach volleyball alike?
Beach volleyball and accounting are similar in that each requires strategic planning, problem-solving, and an effective execution of a plan. They also depend on strong individual performance, with clear communication and collaboration within a team or partnership to succeed under pressure.

Additionally, there is a common misconception about both fields. When I tell people I’ve chosen to study accounting or play beach volleyball in Oregon, I often get reactions of disbelief. Many people think accounting is boring or too difficult and assume playing in the sand and rain is miserable. What they do not see is the satisfaction and excitement that comes from solving complex problems, whether in a financial statement or on the court, especially under challenging circumstances.

Where do your majors in accounting and media arts intersect?
Both accounting and media arts are forms of storytelling. While media arts present a narrative more directly through visuals and content, accounting tells the story of a business through numbers and financial data. Professionals in both fields can shape how their story is framed and communicated, though there are more restrictions in accounting (understandably).

What impact have your two scholarships from the OSCPA Foundation had on your accounting journey?
The scholarship has been instrumental in advancing my accounting career. After receiving my first scholarship, I personally thanked the managing partner at the accounting firm who sponsored me, which connected me to an interview for their summer internship program. That summer internship turned into a full-time offer upon my graduation this spring.

My second year receiving the OSCPA scholarship covered the remaining tuition costs for my senior year, which has allowed me to focus on both my studies and beach volleyball without financial worry. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to finish my last year of school with focus and anticipation for what’s next. I truly appreciate everyone involved with the OSCPA The Educational Foundation for their direct impact on my accounting journey.
