How do you define your identity and/or cultural background?
I am an educated Pakistani-born, male, Muslim, CPA from the Oregon State Board of Accountancy. I also hold an Executive Master of Business Administration certificate. I grew up in a very challenging socio-economic environment. Luckily I had very good mentors along the way and I had the key to success: improve my skill set and success will follow. Working in a Big 5 accounting firm in the Middle East gave me an opportunity to shine in the firm when I qualified as a CPA.

Do you have any favorite traditions or ways to celebrate your identity?
There are three main celebrations: Eid Al Fitr - a celebration at the end of the fasting month Ramadan. Eid Al Adha - a celebration of sacrifice after the Hajj pilgrimage, and a celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). These holidays are observed with family and community and we reflect on our blessings.

How does your identity impact you in the professional world? Are there any aspects of your culture you incorporate in your work?
My identity as a practicing Muslim has earned me respect and trust in my professional world. At work, I incorporate our core values of respecting others and their culture, and appreciating the good work of others and discipline. These traits have shown me to be a team player and an asset to the company. I am lucky to work in the healthcare sector as it gives me a sense of purpose when we improve patient life, every day.

Have there been individuals in your community or mentors who have shaped how you express your cultural identity?
Shaikh Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadri is a very inspiring personality of this century who has shaped not only me, but millions around the world. He is my mentor.

What can universities and businesses, especially predominantly White institutions (PWIs), do to better support your community?
Awareness sessions - conducting awareness sessions in universities, including articles about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In businesses, inclusion of specific and achievable goals on DEI in annual plans, allowing reasonable time off for those to celebrate, and to allocate a reasonable budget to celebrate events as company events. Employees put in their best when they feel safe and respected in the workplace.
