How do you define your identity and/or cultural background?
As an Asian American with Filipino roots, my identity is woven from family heritage, cultural experiences, and shared values. It encompasses resilience, adaptability, and a deep appreciation for community bonds.

Do you have any favorite traditions or ways to celebrate your identity?
One of my cherished traditions is celebrating Thanksgiving (“Pasalamat”) with my family at our local Iglesia Ni Cristo Church, which has Filipino roots. This occasion allows us to express gratitude, reflect on the past year, and look forward to the future with optimism.

How does your identity impact you in the professional world? Are there any aspects of your culture you incorporate in your work?
My identity significantly influences my professional journey. I draw from my cultural experiences, emphasizing collaboration, resilience, and an emphatic approach to service. Being visible as an Asian American professional matters.

Have there been individuals in your community or mentors who have shaped how you express your cultural identity?
Being a member of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Oregon has shaped how I express my cultural identity. Additionally, being around church leaders has further helped me embrace my roots and influence my leadership style.

What can universities and businesses, especially predominantly White institutions (PWIs), do to better support your community?
Universities and businesses, especially PWIs, can better support our community by:

  • Ensuring diverse representation
  • Providing cultural competence training
  • Establishing mentorship programs
  • Offering scholarships and grants
