What impact did this scholarship have on your accounting journey?
After I received an OSCPA Educational Foundation Scholarship, I wanted to thank the firm that sponsored my scholarship. Once I received notice of the award. I went into the firm to thank them personally. The partners were happy to meet with me, and even asked for my resume as they had an internship opportunity. Shortly thereafter, I accepted the internship which turned into a full-time position and I’m still working for them 17 years later!

What were some of your early career goals, and how have they evolved since then?
My career goals started with obtaining a position with a smaller firm where I could focus on building relationships and learning various skills to advance in my role within the firm and my career. I obtained my CPA license and have grown far more than I originally had envisioned. Since then, my goals have evolved to include enhancing skills in a technology-driven environment and gaining proficiency in specialized areas. In addition, my focus has been on being more personable and unique in my client interactions, establishing good connections, and developing trustworthy relationships with those I encounter.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in accounting?
My advice would be to exhaust all resources available, seeking out any volunteer or internship opportunities. Expand knowledge by visiting places interested in working and reach out to individuals already in the field. Build a network of mentors and professionals that will help develop and navigate a career path, while helping explore specialized areas of focus. Be flexible and adaptable to changing environments. Develop strong communication skills. You never know how a simple ‘thank you’ might impact your career.
